Adobe Acrobat redaction or PiBye: preparing a document for AI

Adobe Acrobat Pro’s Redact tool permanently removes text and is the right choice for documents you will file or publish. For getting AI help on a client document, permanent black boxes work against you: the AI cannot tell redacted people apart, and you cannot restore the names in its draft. PiBye replaces details with consistent stand-ins and restores them locally.

The manual workaround people use

Redacting in Acrobat and inventing fake names is a common do-it-yourself approach. One Hacker News commenter described it this way: “I used Adobe Acrobat to redact his personal identifiers from the report before uploading it to Claude. I generally also prompt using fake names. It’s not perfect, but it’s better than nothing.”

It works, with effort. The redaction is permanent, the fake names are tracked in your head, and the AI’s draft needs every name put back by hand.

What Acrobat Pro does well

Acrobat’s Redact tool removes the underlying text rather than drawing a box over it, which is what court filings and public releases need. It sits in Acrobat Pro, which Adobe listed at $19.99 a month on an annual plan, $239.88 a year prepaid, or $29.99 month to month when we checked; the Standard plan does not include redaction.

Acrobat users do report problems. In a long Adobe Community thread, users describe a single redaction being repeated on every page, with workarounds involving background images and scan enhancement.

Who should choose which

Choose Acrobat Pro when the redacted document itself is the deliverable: a filing, a disclosure, a public record. It is also the better buy if you need a full PDF editor anyway.

Choose PiBye when the goal is AI help with a document you still need in full: a summary, a draft letter, an analysis. Stand-ins keep the AI’s reasoning intact, and the real details come back in its draft on your Mac.

Where PiBye fits

How PiBye handles this

PiBye keeps your original untouched, replaces approved details with stand-ins like [PERSON_001] in a separate copy, and restores them when the AI’s work returns, flagging any stand-in the AI changed.

PiBye is not a permanent redaction tool for filings. Use Acrobat, or another redaction tool, for that job.

Frequently asked questions

Is PiBye a replacement for Acrobat’s redaction?

Not for filing or publishing. PiBye prepares copies for AI use and restores details afterwards; permanent redaction is a different job.

Can the AI work with black-boxed text?

It can, but it cannot tell whether two blacked-out names are the same person, which weakens summaries and drafts. Consistent stand-ins avoid that.
