RedactDesk or PiBye: permanent redaction or a round trip?
RedactDesk is a free, open-source Mac app that permanently redacts PDFs on your computer before you give them to ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini. PiBye does a round trip instead: it swaps identifiers for consistent stand-ins in PDFs, Word files and scans, you review each one, and the real details go back into the AI's returned document on your Mac. Choose RedactDesk for a free one-way cleanup; choose PiBye when the work has to come back to the client.
Key takeaway: Both keep the original on your Mac. The difference is whether the details can come back into the finished document.

What RedactDesk does well
Per its own site, RedactDesk is "Free, open-source PDF redaction for Mac", MIT licensed, and runs "entirely on your Mac using the on-device privacy-filter model" with no network requests for inference. It detects eight categories (names, emails, phone numbers, addresses, account numbers, private URLs, dates and secrets), and its redaction is permanent: "Text is deleted from the PDF, not just visually covered." Its FAQ says scanned documents are OCR'd first.
Free, auditable and permanent is a strong combination for anyone who needs a clean PDF and nothing more.

Who should choose which
Choose RedactDesk if you want a free tool, need a permanently redacted PDF, work on an Intel Mac, or want to audit the source code yourself. For a one-off question to ChatGPT about a PDF, it may be all you need.
Choose PiBye if the AI's work has to become a client document again: a letter, a summary, a draft agreement. Stand-ins keep the parties distinct for the AI, and PiBye puts the real names, numbers and addresses back into the returned draft. It also covers Word files and Canadian and US ID numbers such as SINs, UCIs and A-numbers.
Where PiBye fits
How PiBye handles this
PiBye imports PDFs, scans and Word files on your Mac, proposes stand-ins for every identifier, and shows each one for review. When the AI's draft comes back, PiBye restores the real details into the document locally. The AI sees the case, not the client.

Frequently asked questions
Is RedactDesk's output reversible?
Its site describes permanent redaction: text deleted from the PDF. That is the point of the tool, and the reason it cannot restore names afterwards.
Can I use both?
Yes. PiBye for AI drafting that returns to the client, and a permanent redaction tool for documents you file or publish.
