IRCC PDF form stuck on “Please wait…” on a Mac
The “Please wait… If this message is not eventually replaced…” page means your PDF viewer cannot display an Adobe XFA form. IRCC’s barcode forms are built this way, and Preview cannot display them. Download the form again, open it in Adobe Acrobat Reader instead of Preview, fill it in, and click Validate. Submit that validated file, not a copy made in another app.
Key takeaway: For anything you send to IRCC, use Adobe Acrobat Reader. A static copy from another tool is fine for reading or your records, but it has no working barcodes.

Why Preview shows “Please wait…”
IRCC forms with a Validate button contain an XFA form that Adobe Reader draws when the file opens. The PDF also holds a one-page placeholder with the “Please wait” text for viewers that cannot draw XFA. Preview shows that placeholder, so the form looks broken even though the file is fine.
IRCC says these forms “use special encoding” and that “You need a computer with Adobe Reader 10 or higher to use them.” It also says mobile devices such as iPads and phones cannot be used for its forms.
How to open and validate the form on a Mac
These steps follow IRCC’s own help centre.
- Download a fresh copy of the form from IRCC. IRCC notes that old copies may stop letting you save or sign because the form’s certificate has changed.
- Save the form to your Mac, then right-click it and choose Open With, then Adobe Acrobat Reader. Opening it in Preview shows the placeholder again.
- If nothing happens when you click Validate, turn on JavaScript in Acrobat Reader under Preferences, then JavaScript.
- Fill in every field marked with an asterisk, then click Validate. A page of barcodes appears at the end when the form is complete.
- Save the validated file. For an online application, upload that file to your account and do not print it. For a paper application, print it including the barcode page.
If Acrobat Reader will not install or validate
IRCC’s help centre lists the usual causes: an out-of-date Reader, a phone or tablet, JavaScript turned off, or missing mandatory fields. For Mac users it notes that the newest Reader “may cause some issues” and suggests an older Reader version.
On an older Mac the current Reader may not install at all. Applicants on the CanadaVisa forum describe exactly this problem. If you cannot run a supported Reader, use IRCC’s technical-issue contact rather than submitting a converted file.
When a static copy is the right tool
You often need to read a completed form without Acrobat: a consultant reviewing a client’s form, a family member checking answers, or keeping a record of exactly what was submitted. For those jobs a static PDF that opens in Preview is useful.
A static copy is never the file IRCC processes. It has no working barcodes, and IRCC requires the validated form for both online and paper applications.
Where PiBye fits
How PiBye handles this
PiBye’s Lock PDF lays out XFA forms such as IRCC’s itself, on your Mac, and saves a static copy beside the original that opens in Preview or any PDF viewer. The original file is not changed, and nothing is uploaded.
Use it to read a completed form, keep a record, or send a readable copy to your representative. Keep using Adobe Acrobat Reader to validate and submit the form itself.

Frequently asked questions
Can I fill an IRCC form in Preview?
No. IRCC’s barcode forms are XFA forms that Preview cannot display. IRCC says you need Adobe Reader 10 or higher, and that its forms do not work on phones or tablets.
Can I submit a flattened or printed-to-PDF copy of an IRCC barcode form?
Not for forms with a Validate button. IRCC says to validate the form, upload the validated file for online applications without printing it, and print it with the barcodes for paper applications.
Why did the form stop letting me save or sign?
IRCC says old copies of a form may lose save, signature and barcode features when its Adobe certificate changes. Download a new copy of the form.
