This article describes an earlier version of PiBye, released as Sidebar. PiBye now uses Import → Review → Use with AI → Restore, with explicit file handoff and no automatic Claude connection. Claude Desktop can help with a client file. It should not be handed the identifiers in that file. Redact and approve on your Mac, point Claude at a Vault of those copies, then Unredact the draft with the names filled back in.

A black rectangle is an annotation. The original text stays in the PDF content stream and can be copied, searched, or extracted. True redaction removes the text. A fully rasterized “static” PDF can do that — and then Claude cannot read the matter either.

You can redact a PDF on a Mac without uploading it. Preview (Ventura and later) and Acrobat Pro both remove content locally if you use the real Redact tool. Neither finds client identifiers for you, and neither is built to feed Claude Desktop a Vault.

Ordinary Claude Desktop reads local folders you attach, then sends that conversation content to Anthropic (or, in third-party deployments, to the endpoint you configured). “On my Mac” is not the same as “never leaves this Mac.” Redact before the folder is attached.

In United States v. Heppner (S.D.N.Y., February 2026), a court held that a defendant’s consumer Claude chats were not protected by attorney-client privilege or work product. Putting a client file into Claude is a third-party disclosure problem. Redaction does not turn that chat into a privileged communication.

Local AI means the model runs on your hardware and the document never becomes a cloud prompt. Claude Desktop is not that. On-device redaction is a third design: detection stays on the Mac, then you deliberately share a covered copy with Claude.

A scan is a picture of a page. Black boxes on the picture may hide ink and still leave an OCR layer, or they may hide nothing a second OCR pass cannot read. Run OCR on the Mac, mark identifiers, review every page, then write the copy Claude is allowed to see.
