Why your filled-in PDF form looks blank to the person you sent it to
A filled form can look blank to a recipient when their PDF viewer draws the fields differently from yours. Mac users report forms saved from Preview showing empty fields in Adobe Acrobat until each field is clicked. The reliable fix is to send a flattened copy, where your answers are drawn into the page itself rather than stored in fields.

What is going wrong
Form fields hold two things: the value you typed and an appearance that tells viewers how to draw it. If the appearance is missing or written in a way another app does not use, the recipient’s viewer can show an empty box even though the value is in the file.
On Apple Support Communities, a user who filled a bank form in Preview wrote that the recipient opened it “in Acrobat or Adobe Reader and the fields don’t display the filled in form, unless you click in the field.” Another replied that recent Acrobat versions “have an incompatibility with a PDF with form that’s created or saved from Preview.”
How to send a form that looks the same everywhere
- Keep your filled-in original, in case you need to change an answer later.
- Make a flattened copy: in Preview choose File > Print, then Save as PDF, or use a flatten command in a PDF editor.
- Open the flattened copy and confirm every answer, checkbox and date is visible.
- Send the flattened copy, and say in your message that it is a completed, non-editable copy.
When not to flatten
If the recipient must process the form electronically, ask before flattening. Some organisations read the field values, and a flattened copy has none. Government forms with barcodes, such as IRCC’s, must be submitted exactly as the issuing body specifies.
If you received the form to fill and return, check whether the sender wants the fillable file back. Flattening is for sharing a finished result.
Where PiBye fits
How PiBye handles this
PiBye’s Lock PDF makes the flattened copy for you, one form or many at a time. Answers become page content, so they display the same in Preview, Acrobat, browsers and on phones, and the copy is saved beside your original.
It works on your Mac without uploading the form, which matters when the form holds banking, medical or immigration details.

Frequently asked questions
Is my information lost when fields look blank?
Usually not. The value is often still in the file and appears when the field is clicked. The problem is how the field is drawn, which flattening removes.
Will flattening fix a form that is blank for me too?
Only if the answers are in the file. If the fields are truly empty, fill them in again before flattening.
