Who it's for
PiBye for family lawyers
Family files pair heavy financial disclosure with children's details. Under the Federal Child Support Guidelines, a spouse applying for support must include every personal income tax return and notice of assessment for the three most recent years, plus a recent statement of earnings. For AI work on that material, keep the amounts the calculation needs and replace names, SINs, account numbers, addresses, employers and the children's names and birth dates.

Why family files are different
Section 21 of the Federal Child Support Guidelines lists the income information an applicant must provide, including "a copy of every personal income tax return filed by the spouse for each of the three most recent taxation years" and "every notice of assessment and reassessment". Those documents carry SINs, addresses, employers and account details on almost every page, and the task, calculating income and support, depends on the amounts.
That makes the usual rule, remove everything, the wrong one. The useful copy keeps figures and removes identities.
What to keep and what to replace
| Detail | In the AI copy |
|---|---|
| Spouses' and children's names | Stand-ins |
| Children's dates of birth | Stand-ins, with ages stated where support depends on them |
| SINs, account and card numbers | Stand-ins |
| Home addresses, employers, schools | Stand-ins |
| Line amounts, income, expenses | Keep |
| Tax years and dates | Keep |
Income records are sensitive even without names: the OPC says they are almost always considered sensitive. Share only the years and documents the task needs.
Professional guidance
Canadian law societies ask lawyers to remove identifying client information before using generative AI. In a family file the opposing party and the children are identified too, so the redaction covers everyone named, not only your client.
Consistency matters more here than in most files. The same child appears in a parenting plan, a school letter and a tax return; if each document gives them a different stand-in, the AI loses track of who is who, and so does anyone reading its summary.
Where PiBye fits
How PiBye handles this
PiBye replaces names, SINs, addresses, dates of birth, card numbers and IBANs on your Mac, including in scanned tax documents, while leaving amounts readable. Check domestic bank account numbers in review, since they have no dedicated detector yet. Consistent stand-ins keep the parties distinct across every document in the matter, and the real details go back into the draft locally.

Frequently asked questions
Can the AI calculate support from a redacted return?
It can read the amounts if they are kept. Check any calculation against the Guidelines and official tables yourself; AI arithmetic is not reliable enough to file.
Should the opposing party's details be replaced too?
Yes. Everyone identified in the file, including the other spouse and the children, is identified to the AI provider unless replaced.
