Can ChatGPT read local files without uploading them?

Partly. The ChatGPT desktop app can connect to a local MCP server, a program on your computer that reads files and returns their content when ChatGPT calls it, so you do not attach the file. But the content a tool returns becomes part of the conversation and is processed by OpenAI, just like an upload. ChatGPT on the web cannot use local servers. The protection comes from what the tool is allowed to return.

How the desktop app reaches local files

OpenAI's documentation says the ChatGPT desktop app, Codex CLI and IDE extension support MCP servers, including "STDIO servers: Servers that run as a local process (started by a command)." You add one under Settings, MCP servers, Add server. It also says "ChatGPT web doesn't read local Codex configuration files", so this is a desktop feature.

What still leaves your computer

The file is not uploaded as a file, but its text is sent to the model when a tool returns it. For a client document, that distinction matters less than it sounds: whatever the tool returns, OpenAI receives. Two things reduce what it receives:

  • A narrow server: tools that can read only specific, chosen documents rather than your whole disk
  • A prepared copy: the document the tool returns has identifiers already replaced

Does this work with every ChatGPT mode?

No. Local STDIO servers are configured in the ChatGPT desktop app (shared with Codex). OpenAI's documentation says ChatGPT on the web does not read local configuration.

Is reading through a local server more private than uploading?

Only if the server returns less. A server with full disk access can return anything; one limited to prepared copies returns only those.
